How the finder chooses a press tool

The first test is not brand preference. The selected tool must have a documented path for the fitting system, material and size. A compact tool that is convenient for service work should not be recommended for a 2-inch MegaPress job if its approved system capacity stops at 1 inch.

After those hard limits are applied, the finder ranks the remaining candidates by the factors that change day-to-day usability: whether you already own compatible attachments, whether the tool shares your battery platform, how important tight-space access is, and whether you expect occasional or high-volume use.

The result deliberately separates the press tool from the required jaw, ring or actuator family. Buying the right power tool but the wrong attachment is still the wrong setup.

These are the factors the finder uses instead of a generic “best press tool” score.

System approval beats nominal capacity

A tool may have enough force and general pipe-size capacity but still require a specific approved jaw, ring or actuator for ProPress, MegaPress, PureFlow, RLS or another system.

Compact and standard attachments are different families

RIDGID Mini, Compact and Standard Series attachments are not one universal family. Milwaukee likewise separates M12 and M18 attachment families. Existing jaws can materially affect the best tool choice.

Larger pipe changes the attachment architecture

Beyond common jaw sizes, many systems move to press rings, actuators or specialized boosters. The largest size you expect to encounter should be selected before you buy the tool.

Access can justify a smaller tool

Inline compact tools and mini tools can be materially easier in cabinets, chases and mechanical rooms. But compactness should never be used to stretch beyond the documented system limit.

Which press tool should I use for Viega ProPress?

The answer depends on the largest size, access requirements and attachment family. Current verified options in this finder include compact tools such as the Milwaukee M12 FORCE LOGIC 2573 and RIDGID RP 251 for ProPress through 1-1/4 inch, and full-size tools such as the Milwaukee M18 FORCE LOGIC 2922 and RIDGID RP 350 when larger capacities are required. The exact approved jaw or ring must still match the fitting system and size.

Can a Milwaukee M12 press tool be used for MegaPress?

Milwaukee's 2026 compatibility matrix lists the current M12 FORCE LOGIC 2573 for Viega MegaPress and MegaPressG through 1 inch when used with the specified M12 IPS-P jaw or ring family. Larger MegaPress sizes require a different tool and attachment setup.

Are Milwaukee M12 and M18 press jaws interchangeable?

No. Milwaukee identifies separate M12 and M18 attachment families, and its current product guidance states that M12 and M18 jaws are not interchangeable. Select the attachment family intended for the exact press tool.

Which RIDGID press tool works with RLS refrigeration jaws?

RIDGID's current RLS jaw documentation identifies RLS refrigeration jaws for Compact Series press tools such as the RP 251. The same instruction sheet says those jaws do not work with Standard Series tools such as the RP 350 and RP 351.

Does the finder use current retail prices to rank tools?

No. Budget is used only as a soft selection preference because tool and kit prices change by configuration and retailer. Compatibility, required capacity, fitting system and attachment family take priority over price.
