RIDGID 12-R Dies & Die Heads: NPT Sizes, Part Numbers & Compatibility
The 12-R family is widely reused across portable threading systems, but the exact head, replacement dies, nominal size and thread standard still have to match. This guide turns the family name into concrete catalog-number and compatibility checks.
Head number and die number are different purchase decisions
For a 12-R setup, identify the nominal pipe size and thread standard first, then verify both the complete die-head catalog number and the replacement die-set catalog number. Do not search by “12-R” alone when ordering replacements.

Complete head vs. replacement dies
A complete 12-R die head includes the head body and installed cutting dies for a specific size/standard. Replacement dies are the cutting set only. If the head interface and size are correct but threads are poor, the appropriate repair may be a new die set rather than another complete head.
Conversely, replacement dies cannot convert a 1-inch die head into a 1-1/4-inch head. Each nominal size uses its corresponding head geometry. Use the Die & Die Head Finder to identify both parts together.
NPT vs. BSPT: 12-R is a family, not one thread form
RIDGID publishes 12-R heads for NPT and for British/international standards including BSPT. The same “12-R” family name therefore does not establish the thread form. A purchasing record should include at least family + size + standard + die type/material.
An NPT 12-R head can physically engage a compatible Power Drive, but that does not make it suitable for a BSPT connection. The cutting geometry must match the required standard.
Which threaders use the 12-R interface?
The RIDGID 700 is the core RIDGID Power Drive for direct 12-R use. Milwaukee's current M18 FUEL 2874 documentation explicitly lists RIDGID 12-R compatibility, and DEWALT's DCE700 documentation describes compatibility with RIDGID 12-R-style heads. This gives contractors with an existing 12-R inventory multiple powered-drive choices.
Do not extend that assumption to compact tools. Milwaukee's 2870 uses a different compact head family, and RIDGID 600-I/690-I are centered on 11-R rather than 12-R.
Alloy, high-speed and material-specific dies
RIDGID publishes multiple die types within the manual-threader family, including alloy, high-speed and application-specific variants. The correct choice depends on the material and drive conditions. A “better steel” description from a reseller is not enough to establish suitability.
For the Model 535 family, RIDGID explicitly notes that machines operating at 45 RPM or higher should use high-speed dies. That kind of manufacturer rule is why die selection should remain linked to the drive/machine and not be treated as a stand-alone commodity purchase.
Buying and replacement checklist
- Family: confirm 12-R rather than 11-R, 00-R or Universal machine dies.
- Nominal size: match the head and die set to the pipe size.
- Thread standard: NPT and BSPT are separate head/die families.
- Material/application: verify alloy/high-speed/stainless or other manufacturer-specific die selection.
- Condition: inspect used heads for damage and installed dies for wear/chipping.
- Power drive: verify direct fit or manufacturer-documented 12-R-style compatibility.
Part-number mistakes to avoid
Three numbers can all describe a “1-inch 12-R” purchase but refer to different things: the complete head, the alloy replacement die set and the high-speed replacement die set. For example, 37400 is the current 1-inch NPT complete die head, 37835 is the 1-inch alloy NPT replacement die set and 37880 is the 1-inch high-speed NPT replacement die set.
Keep those identifiers separate in maintenance records and purchase requests. Recording only “1-inch 12-R” invites the wrong item to be ordered, especially when the head remains serviceable and only the cutting dies need replacement.
