Portable Pipe Threader Guide: Cordless, Handheld & 2-Inch Options
Portable pipe threading is a workflow category, not a single tool design. The right choice depends on whether you need compact service capability, full 2-inch capacity, battery operation, or compatibility with die heads you already own.
Portable does not automatically mean cordless
The category includes corded Power Drives and modern battery threaders. Choose first by pipe size, die-head family and work location; choose the power source after those requirements are satisfied.

Current portable platforms and the head families they imply
The Milwaukee 2870 is a compact M18 system rated through 1-1/4 inch and uses Milwaukee compact forged-aluminum heads. Milwaukee also states those compact heads are compatible with the RIDGID 600-I, which creates a useful cross-platform accessory path.
The Milwaukee 2874 is the full-size M18 threader and documents RIDGID 12-R and Reed R12+ compatibility. DEWALT's DCE700 covers 1/2–2 inch black iron/rigid conduit in its current documentation and states compatibility with RIDGID 12-R-style heads. RIDGID's 700 is a corded portable Power Drive centered on the 12-R family, while the 600-I and 690-I use the 11-R family.
Those differences are why a “portable pipe threader” search should not jump straight to a brand recommendation. The owned die-head family can materially change the best purchase.
Compact vs. full-size portable threading
If most work stops at 1-1/4 inches, a compact system can reduce carry weight and improve access. Milwaukee's 2870 is specifically positioned around that service/repair use case. Full-size 2-inch tools are more flexible for mechanical piping and larger conduit but bring more mass, larger support hardware and larger heads.
Do not choose a 2-inch tool solely because “more capacity is better.” A service technician who threads 1/2–1 inch pipe all day may value the compact system more than unused 2-inch capability. Conversely, a contractor who occasionally needs 1-1/2 or 2 inches should avoid locking into a compact-only head family.
Support and kickback control are part of the system
Portable pipe threading produces substantial reaction torque. Modern cordless tools add electronic kickback-control systems, but those features do not replace the manufacturer's support arm or clamp arrangement. Milwaukee's current cordless threaders use dedicated support arms; DEWALT supplies a pipe clamp in current DCE700 kits; RIDGID publishes support equipment for its Power Drives.
If a used tool is missing the proper support arm/clamp, treat that as a missing system component rather than a cosmetic omission.
Portable vs. stationary threading machine
Portable tools excel when the pipe is already installed, when work moves between floors or service locations, or when the operator does not need an integrated cutter/reamer/oiler station. A pipe threading machine is generally stronger for repeated bench/shop fabrication because the cutting, reaming, threading and oil-management workflow is integrated around the workpiece.

Existing die heads can be more important than battery preference
A contractor already invested in 12-R heads may reasonably favor a full-size drive that documents 12-R compatibility, while a service technician starting fresh may prefer a lighter compact ecosystem. Likewise, an existing 11-R inventory makes RIDGID's 600-I or 690-I path more relevant than a generic “best cordless threader” ranking would suggest.
This is also why battery-platform loyalty should be treated as a ranking preference rather than a hard compatibility requirement. A tool that uses your preferred batteries but forces replacement of every die head may be a worse system-level purchase than a different drive that reuses proven tooling.
